Would A Second Wild Card Have Helped Recent Tigers Clubs?

wildcards.jpgRumblings about adding a second Wild Card team to the MLB playoff mix got me thinking about the Tigers’ fate in recent years, had this option been in play. Only two seasons apply:

  • In 2007, the Yankees were the A.L. Wild Card, finishing 94-68. The Tigers and Mariners, both 88-74, would’ve qualified for the second Wild Card but, assuming a head-to-head tie breaker, the Tigers would’ve played in October. They won six of the 10 games against Seattle that year.

  • And in 2009, despite the Game 163 debacle, the Tigers would not have qualified as a second Wild Card with their 86-77 record. Texas finished 87-75 and would’ve gone to the playoffs.
