    August 16, 2024

    W: Willie Hernández (7-2) – L: John Curtis (0-1) | Boxscore

Record: 79-43 — 10 games up on Toronto

    Highlights

    • At the end of the second inning it was 5-0 Tigers. At the end of the fourth inning, it was 7-5 Angels.
    • Jack Morris has another miserable outing: 32/3 innings, nine hits, four walks, and seven earned runs. A trio of Tigers relievers held the Angels in check for the next eight innings — Doug Bair, 31/3 scoreless; Aurelio López, 11/3 scoreless; and Willie Hernández 32/3 scoreless. I still can’t get over Sparky using his closer for nearly four innings.
    • Alan Trammell, Kirk Gibson, Lance Parrish and Chet Lemon each had two hits. Brian Downing had three hits and five RBI for California.

    August 14, 2024

    Game 1: Angels 6 – Tigers 4

    W: Don Aase (2-1) – L: Willie Hernández (6-2) – S: Luis Sánchez (11) | Boxscore

    Record: 77-42

    Highlights

    • A decent start from Juan Berenguer, six innings, five hits, six strikeouts, is wasted by the bullpen. The Tigers were up 4-3 in the seventh until Bob Boone homered off Aurelio López to tie it. Then Willie surrendered two runs on three hits and a walk.
    • The Tigers tagged Angels starter Mike Witt with four solo homers: Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, Lance Parrish and Howard Johnson.
    • Both teams had 10 hits; Juan Beníquez had four of them for California.

    W: Bruce Kison (3-1) – L: Dave Rozema (7-4) | Boxscore

Record: 77-43 — 7.5 games up on Toronto

    Highlights

    • A seven-run third inning put this one out of reach in a hurry, making it 8-0. Doug DeCinces drove in four, Bobby Grich plated three and the Angels got three hits each from Rob Wilfong and Reggie Jackson.
    • Rozema started and last two innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. Doug Bair wasn’t good either: 31/3 innings, five runs, five hits and three walks.

  • Aug. 9, 1984: Travel Day to K. C.

    August 9, 2024

The Tigers likely savored the off day after all the doubleheaders. Let’s look ahead 10 years to a markedly different brand of Tigers baseball played in 1994. 😬

    Aug. 9, 1994: Tigers 10 – Brewers 4

    W: Sean Bergman (2-1) – L: Cal Eldred (11-11) | Boxscore

Record: 52-61 — Fifth place; 19 games behind the Yankees

    Highlights

    • As seems appropriate for this team, Cecil Fielder provided 60% of the Tigers’ runs despite one for three night: a grand slam and two sac-fly RBI.
    • Alan Trammell and Mickey Tettleton also homered, and Lou Whitaker had four hits — all singles.
    • Plus, doubles from Junior Félix (!) and Kirk Gibson.
    • After this game, the last-place Tigers had two more before the player’s strike.

    Miscellany

    • Venue: Tiger Stadium
    • Umpires: HP – John Hirschbeck, 1B – Ted Barrett, 2B – Rich Garcia, 3B – Larry Young
    • Time of Game: 3:05

    • Field Condition: Dry
    • Start Time Weather: 61° F, Wind 5 mph from Left to Right, Night, No Precipitation.

  • Aug. 8, 1984: Red Sox 8 – Tigers 0

    August 8, 2024

    W: Oil Can Boyd (7-8) – L: Glenn Abbott (3-4) | Boxscore

Record: 74-41 — 8 games up on Toronto

    Highlights

    • Abbott made his final appearance as a Tiger and as a major leaguer in this one. He started and wasn’t able to survive the first inning: 2/3 of an inning, five runs on five hits, including a three-run homer from Rich Gedman — who had a five-RBI game.
    • Juan Berenguer pitched 51/3 innings of solid relief — two days after pitching a complete game.
    • The Tigers had seven hits, all singles, off Boyd; Johnny Grubb had two of them.

    Miscellany

    • Venue: Fenway Park
    • Umpires: HP – Jim McKean, 1B – Durwood Merrill, 2B – Dan Morrison, 3B – Tim Welke
    • Time of Game: 2:28
    • Attendance: 32,563

    Birthdays

Alexis Gomez and the late Mike Ivie, Frank Howard, Marlin Stuart, Ken Holloway and Jack Smith*

*Smith appeared in one major-league game, for the Tigers, on May 18, 1912. He entered the game as a defensive substitution at third base, and didn’t have a plate appearance. This was an infamous game against the Athletics in Philadelphia when (future Catholic priest) Allan Travers was forced into duty and allowed 24 runs on 26 hits and seven walks. Read about him here.
