Former Tigers pitcher and major league pitching coach, Vern Ruhle, passed away Saturday night in Houston.
Ruhle, a Coleman, Mich., native, pitched for the Tigers from 1974-77 — i.e., the lean years — posting a 25-29 record. He spent the most of his 13-year career with the Astros. His career year was in 1980: 12-4, 2.37 ERA.
I’ll have to confirm this, but I’m almost certain that my brother’s first big-league autograph came from Ruhle at a youth baseball banquet in the early to mid 1970s.
Bummer.
